Now that summer is upon us, we have been receiving visitors from all over. This week, Jack came up to visit from Louisiana (we bought him a plane ticket for his graduation present). Of course, he had poutine.
He also made some new friends.
Having your nephew around is also a good excuse to go fishing. Not to keep you in suspense, we have not yet caught much, but we have a found a few streams that should produce trout. There are many places to fish within 90 min of Montreal and most of them are only accessible by 4 wheel drive. Here are some pictures of Riviere Ouareau, which had a lot of nice pools and eddies. Jack and I fished it pretty hard with panther martins, but all we caught were a few tiny small mouth bass and a couple of carp. The river was not too accessible, but we were fishing the one spot that you can get to easily from the road, so it may have been over fished. Also, the trout just may not be too active this time of year.
Regardless, the scenery was nice. We caught a few tiny brook trout in a stream that empties into the Ouarea, but they were too small to keep.
Jack and I also headed up to a wild life reserve about 2 hours to the north (Reserve Faunique Rouge-Matawain). The place is pretty remote - we went on a weekday and saw absolutely nobody. Once again, the stream fishing was not fantastic, but the scenery and lakes were nice. You can actually rent your own lake at this place. We will have to do this in the future, because that's where I think the big fish are.
We also spent some time fishing the Riviere Rouge, which drain the northwest side of the reserve. It was a large winding river that definitely has big trout - but it really had the look of a fly fishing river and we were not equipped. I'll have to keep this place in mind for later.
Jack managed to catch one nice brook trout (or speckled trout, as they're known here). He caught it on a rattle trap in one of the lakes.
The reserve also had row boats that you're supposed to rent, but since there was no one out there, Jack and I decided to take a little paddle.
Maggie also came along on one of our adventures. Hopefully, we'll figure out how to catch them so that she can land a real Canadian lunker one of these days.
